For IMC’s first edition of the Signal Series at Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club, the role of the piano comes into focus, with two different variations on the piano trio from some of Ireland’s most respected improvising musicians. F-JoB are familiar performers on the jazz scene by night, custodians of the future at DCU’s jazz programme by day, now taking a line-up of piano, drums and bass into new arenas, influenced by their backgrounds in highly creative styles. Also featuring are the Joe O’Callaghan Trio, three acclaimed performers and educators on the improvising scene, bringing together influences from rock, classical and jazz, with dynamic expression at the fore.

As individual artists, the three members of F-JoB have been at the forefront of several of the most artistically and commercially successful projects in creative Irish music over the last fifteen years. Pianist Greg Felton has played in groups lead by Ireland's most renowned jazz musicians Louis Stewart and Ronan Guilfoyle and was commissioned to write and perform a large-scale piece for the RTÉ Living Music Festival in 2007. Bassist Cormac O’Brien is one of the most in-demand bass players in Ireland, holding the bass chair with the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra as well as leading his own groups, and has worked with Louis Stewart, Bobby Watson, Ernie Watts, and Cleveland Watkiss. Drummer Matthew Jacobson is highly active on both the Irish and European creative music scenes, performing and composing leading ensembles including Aerie, Insufficient Funs, Umbra, Ensemble Ériu and ReDiviDeR. For the past year, the three have been developing their own sound as a piano trio. With influences from South Indian Carnatic music; they all have a deep interest in the traditions of jazz but are equally adept at interpreting challenging contemporary material; and all have an open-minded, inclusive vision of the music they perform. "One of the freshest voices in Irish jazz and a must-hear for anyone who wants to know where the piano trio is headed in the 21st century." [Irish Times]

The Joe O’Callaghan Trio are amongst three of Ireland’s leading musicians in the field of contemporary improvised music. Limerick’s Joe O’Callaghan is a genuine force in Irish jazz guitar, with extended tasteful lines, contemporary chord shapes and an instinct for rocking out when the need arises. Japanese-born and Irish-based pianist Izumi Kimura performs across classical, contemporary, jazz, and improvised music, with “a combination of feral creativity and technical virtuosity to the stage that belies her calm demeanour,” [Irish Times]. Bassist Derek Whyte is involved in many of the Dublin Jazz scene's more experimental Jazz groups, including ReDiviDeR, Fuzzy Logic and The Troupe, and plays consistently with leading jazz musicians across Ireland and in the U.K. Recently coming together as a trio, they play original music with influences from jazz, classical and rock music. Having often performed together in larger groups, this is a unique opportunity to hear these three extraordinary musicians come together in a more intimate genre.

Part of our commitment to celebrating Irish-based jazz talent in 2019 and beyond, the Signal Series is a live monthly double-header concert series from IMC presenting the best emerging and established jazz acts from across Ireland.

Please Note: There is generous but not complete seating available in this venue. Seating will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. If you have particular requirements please notify us and we will do our best to assist you.

Ticket Note: IMC is committed to bringing high-quality improvised music at costs which are affordable to our audiences. However, due to the recent increase in VAT on event tickets to 13.5% we have found it necessary to raise ticket prices slightly to continue to provide guaranteed remuneration to our artists.
