Description
As part of the East Asia Film Festival Ireland 2018, we are happy to announce Sites of Translation: In conversation with Professor Chris Berry, Co-moderated by Yiming Jin and Maria O'Brien.
Followed by wine reception: all welcome
The study of Chinese-language cinemas in the West invariably requires some element of translation. However, this process is complex, not least arising out of the visual nature of film. Professor Chris Berry is a renowned academic in the field of Chinese-language Film Studies. In the 1980s, he worked for China Film Import and Export Corporation in Beijing, and his academic research is grounded in work on Chinese cinema and other Chinese screen-based media. His work addresses the complexity of translating cinematic works for a Western audience, both popular and academic. In course of this conversation, Professor Berry will talk about his experiences of working as a film translator and as an academic in the field of Chinese-language cinema.
Chris Berry is Professor of Film Studies at King’s College London. In the 1980s, he worked for China Film Import and Export Corporation in Beijing, and his academic research is grounded in work on Chinese cinema and other Chinese screen-based media, as well as neighbouring countries. He is especially interested in queer screen cultures in East Asia; mediatized public space in East Asian cities; and national and transnational screen cultures in East Asia. Together with John Erni, Peter Jackson, and Helen Leung, he edits the Queer Asia book series for Hong Kong University Press. Prior to his current appointment, he taught at La Trobe University in Melbourne, The University of California, Berkeley, and Goldsmiths, University of London. His latest publication: Chinese Film Festivals: Sites of Translation (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017)
Maria O'Brien is Co-Founder and Co-Organiser of the East Asia Film Festival Ireland, taking place at the IFI Cinema from 5 to 8 April. She has a keen interest in Chinese-language cinemas and has completed an M.Litt at TCD on the transnational films of Ang Lee. She undertook an M.A in Screen Studies in Goldsmiths, University of London, where she studied Chinese Cinema under Professor Chris Berry.
