Sonoro Quartet

The Dublin International Chamber Music Festival (formerly Great Music in Irish Houses) is Ireland’s longest-established chamber music festival and was founded in Castletown House in 1970. Since then, the month of June has been a musical summer must for Irish chamber music devotees. Our objective was and still is, to present concerts of chamber music, “the music of friends” in the sort of smaller, intimate spaces for which the music was originally written, away from the more formal setting of a concert hall. Over the years we have offered Irish audiences the opportunity to hear some of the finest international and Irish artists perform a vast range of chamber music in a variety of Ireland’s most historic and notable buildings, spaces that would not normally resound with beautiful and exciting music. Stately Irish Houses are juxtaposed with some of the country’s iconic, modern buildings showing the diversity of Irish architectural and interior design. From that small sapling planted in Castletown House, the great oak that is now the current Festival has grown and is recognised widely as a prestigious platform for world-class musicians.DICMF is a non-profit making organisation and depends on the support of sponsors and Friends to continue its work into the future.  It is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

PROGRAMMELudwig van Beethoven: String Quartet in C Major, Op 59 No 3 Rasumovsky Seán Doherty: Devil&#x27;s Dream Shostakovich: String Quartet No 2 in A Major, Op 68 We are delighted to join forces with the National String Quartet Foundation to present an afternoon concert by the award-winning Sonoro Quartet in partnership with The Windmill Quarter. Founded in 2019, Sonoro Quartet is one of the leading young string quartets of its generation, performing over 40 concerts annually. In 2022, the Quartet was chosen as ECHO Rising Stars for the 2023-2024 season, embarking on a concert tour that includes 17 performances in leading European halls. Their repertoire encompasses classical masterpieces alongside works and commissions by contemporary composers. The outstanding Belgian-based quartet features Cork violist, Seamus Hickey, violinists, Sarah Jégou-Sageman and Jeroen De Beer, and cellist, Léo Guiguen.The programme open with Beethoven’s third Rasumovsky quartet, its virtuosic outer movements contrasted with an evocative funeral march and a quaint minuet. Seán Doherty’s musical roots lie in the Donegal fiddle tradition and his quartet Devil’s Dream offers an exciting and authentic fusion of trad and classical. Shostakovich’s dark and powerful second quartet was written in 1944, its mood and dramatic vision clearly shaped by the ongoing tragedy of the second world war.
