Overview

Damer House, Roscrea and Tipperary Bealtaine are delighted to screen Rootstock: The making of The School of Hibernia (after Raphael) 2024

Rootstock is a 2024 documentary film directed by Therry Rudin that follows the Irish feminist art collective Na Cailleacha as they create a large-scale artistic project titled "The School of Hibernia”. It shows the artists as they embark on a bold artistic experiment: reimagining Raphael’s renowned composition entirely through the presence and perspective of women. In their recreation, the male figures of the original painting are replaced by leading Irish women from a range of disciplines, while Raphael’s spatial design and narrative structure remain faithfully intact. The result is a powerful re-enactment that challenges historical viewpoints and asserts a contemporary female vision at a time when women’s rights remain under pressure. The music for the work was composed by the accomplished jazz pianist, saxophonist, lyricist and arranger, Carole Nelson.

The film will be followed by Therry Rudin and Carole Nelson in conversation.
