Mobility, Strength & Walking Programme

We are delighted to introduce our new Stepping Out Together programme. This is a Free 6-week combined physical activity programme incorporating strength, mobility, walking & mindfulness.

Who is it for?

This is for adults over 65yrs of all abilities, who have been cocooning or were unable to get involved and have found that their activity levels have dropped due to Covid- 19. Getting back to physical activity can seem like a daunting prospect especially if you feel you are not fit or don’t have the confidence in yourself to get back to activity. The Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership team will support you throughout the 6 weeks to become more active and achieve your own goals.

What is the Stepping Out Programme?

Is a FREE and easy way of getting more energy. Improving your strength, balance & coordination and becoming healthier, all from the comfort of your home and around your local area. Sometimes we are unsure on how to start & what to do. We can be a little fearful of doing too much and often this is the main reason for feeling defeated and giving up when we are just getting started. Stepping out Together works to build strength and confidence in your body & support you to be more physically active. It will also help develop transferable skills for everyday life in a holistic way.

How will it work?

Firstly, you will sign up through our Eventbrite link

We will then contact you by phone to say hello and go through some basics with you, such as verbal health screening, consent and your goals for the 6 weeks. Each week you will receive your training plan, Zoom / YouTube links for the live classes, warm up and cool down exercises and tips. These will be sent via email and WhatsApp group. We will also check in with you to see how you are getting on and we are always available to answer any queries you have.

Each week there are 3 days of walking and mindfulness activities and two Live Zoom strength & mobility classes. We are adding another two Zoom’s “Tea & Chat” on week 3 & 6. These will be a casual and social get together for you to safely meet the other participants on the programme

What are the benefits?

Research has found that regular physical activity has been associated with a wide range of positive health benefits. Strength & mobility training contributes to improving your muscular fitness, bone density, better Independence & mobility. It also has been shown to boost your immune system and digestive function. Helping to alleviate the symptoms of chronic conditions that may hamper mobility such as arthritis.

Including balance and coordination training can greatly reduce the risk of injuries and falling.

Walking regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet. Adding time for mindfulness into your day helps improve numerous brain functions such as multitasking, creativity and has also been shown to help stave off memory loss and cognitive decline.

Taking on the challenge of a new physical Activity programme can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove to yourself that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal. Exercising regularly can also be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to help combat depression.
