About this event
What is ‘Storytime at Home’?
The staff in Central library wanted to come up with an engaging project where adults and children could come to the Central Library to learn all about reading for pleasure. We want to create a fun, relaxing atmosphere – away from the school environment.
This project is currently being aimed at children between 2-6 years old.
The aim of ‘Storytime at Home’ is to teach parents storytelling skills that they can use at home to keep their children engaged when reading at home.
We want adults to be confident in their storytelling abilities and create a joy around storytelling at home.
What does ‘Storytime at Home’ involve?
Children and their accompanying adult(s) will be invited to come to the Central library to listen to one story per week being read to the children in a relaxed and welcoming storytime setting.
The number of participants will be kept to a maximum number of 6 children/adults. By having a smaller group it will allow participants to be actively involved in the storytime session. Participants will feel like they are part of the teaching / learning process, and communication in smaller groups tends to work best.
The accompanying adult will be encouraged to set up a library membership (if they don’t have a membership already) for themselves and/or their child.
After listening to our in-house storyteller(s) read the book. The adult will borrow the book that was read during the session each week.
Adults will be encouraged by library staff to put what they have seen and learned into practice by having their own ‘Storytime at home’.
There will be a “storytelling tips” page given to each adult to accompany the book they are taking home.
When will ‘Storytime at Home’ take place?
‘Storytime at Home’ will be hosted in Central Library, Ilac Centre, Dublin 1 every Monday afternoon at 2PM from November 14th – December 5th in the junior library.
Does it cost anything to take part?
No, everything in the library, including participation in this project is FREE.
What happens after the 4 weeks?
After the 4 weeks we hope that adults have gained some skills and a lot of confidence in storytelling. We hope that reading stories becomes a fun filled activity at home at any time of the day or night.
We hope that everyone that attends now has a love of reading for pleasure.
We will also ask participants to take part in a short survey to let us know their thoughts and how we can improve this project in the future.
We would be delighted to welcome you to take part in ‘Storytime at Home with Central Library’.
If you have any queries or would like to take part please email us at centrallibrary@dublincity.ie or phone 01 222 8300.
