About this event
The mission of B1 is to facilitate and promote the progress of engineering and the international exchange of information and knowledge in the field of insulated cables. The scope includes AC and DC insulated power cable systems for power transmission, distribution and generation connections on land and in submarine applications.

Patrick O’Rourke Senior Consultant Engineer, High Voltage Cables Department, ESB.
- Patrick started his career in 2005 with ESB. He has worked across a variety of business units within ESB including ESB Networks, ESB International and Engineering & Major Projects where he is a specialist in the design, installation and commissioning of Subsea & Terrestrial Power and Fibre Optic systems. Patrick was the Irish representative on a number of Cigre Working Groups which produced Technical Brochures B1.52 (Fault Location on Land and Submarine Links (AC & DC), B1.40 (Offshore Generation Cable Connections) and B1.65 (Installation of Submarine Cables) and he is also currently the Irish representative on Study Committee B1.
Callaghan Aherne CEng, Transmission & Distribution Department, EMP ESB
- Callaghan started his career with ESB in 2009 joining the Asset Management Services department in ESB International where he was primarily involved in HV cable maintenance and commissioning up until 2020, involved in cable systems ranging in voltages from 110 kV to 400 kV across varying cable installation types and technologies. He was the Irish representative on Cigre Working Group B1.60, which produced Technical Brochure 825 “Maintenance of HV cable systems”.
Robert Donaghy High Voltage Cables Manager, EMP ESB
- Robert Donaghy obtained his Engineering Degree from Dublin City University in 1992. With 29 years’ experience in ESB, he has held various positions in the transmission and asset management areas and has been responsible for many major transmission cable projects both in Ireland and internationally. He is currently the high voltage cables manager in ESB Engineering and Major Projects and is the current chairman of the CIGRE Irish National Committee. He was the Irish representative on CIGRE Study Committee B1 from 2010 to 2016. He has been a member of WG B1.04 (Maintenance for HV Cables and Accessories), WG B1.09 (Remaining Life Management of Existing AC Underground Lines), WG B1.27 (Recommendations For Testing Of Long AC Submarine Cables For Extruded Insulation For System Voltages 30kV - 500 kV), and was the convenor of Working Group B1.52 (Fault Location on Land and Submarine Links (AC & DC).
