Developing a Tool-kit for instrumental and vocal teachers:

a 12 week course at the Royal Irish Academy of Music

Join expert educator Grainne Deery on this interactive, lively and varied course between September and December which will explore the following themes:

• The role of the instrumental and vocal teacher in the 21st century
• The business of music teaching
• The Reflective Practitioner
• Creative teaching and practice strategies
• Lesson planning
• Learning differences and styles
• Developing musicianship and aural skills
• Health and wellbeing, motivation, performance anxiety

This courses promises to broaden your knowledge of current literature and research relating to the teaching and learning environment.

WHEN

12 Monday evenings from 6-8 pm

8 foundation weeks 4/9, 11/9, 18/9, 25/9, 2/10, 9/10, 16/10, 23/10

4 reflective weeks 13/11, 20/11/27/11, 4/12

ASSESSMENT

The course is open to those who wish to undertake the assignments (which include class presentations, essays, learning diaries) to achieve 5 ECTS credits from Trinity College Dublin. We also welcome those who wish to audit the course without taking any assessment. All students will receive a certificate of completion from the RIAM.

GRAINNE DEERY, TUTOR

Gráinne Deery holds a dual appointment as Lecturer in Musicianship at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (with a specialism in instrumental and classroom pedagogy) and Assistant Lecturer in Music Education at the Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education at Maynooth University. Her research interests include the development and perception of musical potential within teaching and learning environments.

As a passionate advocate of music education and key contributor to the development of music education in Ireland Gráinne was a central figure in the recent development of the new and innovative DipRIAM, an instrumental teaching Diploma focusing on the teaching and learning environment. Gráinne recently served as a committee member of the Society for Music Education in Ireland (SMEI) and the European Piano Teachers’ Association (EPTA). In addition, Gráinne held the position of Chair of the Irish branch of EPTA 2009-2013 during which time she founded and directed the EPTA Ireland Piano Competition.

Gráinne holds a Masters in Music Performance (University of Leeds), and a Bachelor in Music Education (Trinity College Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music). In addition, she holds a Higher Diploma in Music Teaching, Graduate and Associate Diplomas in Piano Teaching and was awarded a Commendation for Excellence in Teaching by Trinity College Dublin. As a prizewinner and scholarship recipient Gráinne also continues to be active as a pianist, adjudicator, and piano/keyboard harmony teacher.
