Teaching Effectively Online: Practical Perspectives & Learnings

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic saw higher education teaching move online over-night. Our higher education institutions are now coming to the end of the 2nd semester of the 2020/21 Academic Year in which most/all has been delivered online. With a return to ‘normal’ in no way clear at this juncture, online teaching may fully remain for some time to come. Even if there is a move back to on campus teaching and learning it is likely that institutions and individuals may seek a blended approach by to incorporating some virtual elements. Consequently, this webinar will be of interest and relevance to all educators in the higher education context. The structure of the webinar will consist of presentations for forty minutes followed by a Q&A for twenty minutes. The webinar will involve:

• An overview of the planning activities that are needed to effectively teach online • An interactive element demonstrating best practice including signposting, landing pages, Moodle pages, the virtual lab environment etc • Q&A

About our speakers

Prof Graham Heaslip

Graham is Head of the School of Engineering in GMIT and was previously the Head of the School of Business in GMIT. He obtained his B.E. and M.Eng.Sc degrees in Industrial Engineering from the National University of Ireland Galway and completed his PhD studies at the Logistics Institute, University of Hull and was awarded the James Cooper Memorial Cup for best PhD by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. His research has also been recognised by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) where is received a highly commended ranking. Prior to entering academia Graham spent fourteen years working in the Irish Defence Forces both at home and abroad in a variety of logistical appointments, as well as spending time seconded to Humanitarian agencies in a logistical capacity. Graham’s research interests are broadly in the intersections between global logistics / supply chain management, humanitarian logistics and organisational management development. His research-based teaching brings together themes of complex systems theory, innovation, resilience and risk with practical management disciplines such as supply chain management, operations management, and business continuity. Graham is widely published in various management and logistics journals and international conferences over the past few years. His research and consultancy interests span mainstream commercial, defence and other public service contexts examining supply chain management, and operations management issues which impact on organisational effectiveness or innovative practices.

Mr Eamon Walsh

Mr. Eamon Walsh is Head of Department, Enterprise & Technology, School of Business, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Eamon has worked in the high-tech industry for over 20 years working for both multi-nationals and SMEs in Ireland and overseas. He joined GMIT in 2014 as a lecturer in Software Development in the Department of Computing and Applied Physics. He is also a PhD candidate with the Dept of Business Information Systems at NUI Galway and his research area of interest is Digital Identity Management using Blockchain for use in the storage, verification, and distribution of Digital Academic Credentials. Professional goal in life is in helping students get the most from technology in an increasingly complex business environment. Hobbies include music, running, motorcycling and writing poetry!
