The 'Double Self' is a live performance by visual artist Justine McDonnell.

About this event

Within her live performance 'The Double Self' McDonnell moves through a series of scripted scores. Drawing upon autobiographical, fictional and related accounts of historical events she consciously embodies an act of refusal. Performing using her own voice, composed across multiple positions, the voice gathers in moments of silence, breaths and a chorus of chants.

About the artist

Justine McDonnell is a visual artist, writer and performer based in Dublin. She holds an MFA from the University of Ulster 2017 and a B.A in Fine Art from TU Dublin 2015.

Taking the voice as an existing structure, a form of identification, her artistic practice explores how we inherit histories and narratives in the same vein, which can be consciously refused or revealed to rupture representations of the self. Engaged with an ongoing dialogue with multiplicity and identity she continues to dismantle how narratives are retold and rewritten, allowing space for hidden voices to emerge.

Justine McDonnell was selected as the international artist in-residence at Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam, 2021. Her work has been featured in Sculpture Magazine and she is the recipient of the Arts Council of Ireland’s Agility Award 2021 and Visual Arts Bursary Award 2022.

Her work has been selected for numerous group and solo exhibitions including, The Holden Gallery, Manchester (2021), Stabilimento Ostiense Festival, Rome (2020), The Lab Gallery, Dublin (2019), Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast (2018), RAW Labs and Bow Arts, London (2018) and PS2, Belfast (2017).
