Celebrity Classical Concert Sat 7.30 pm

Listening to a great pianist like Pålsson offers not merely some kind of objective evocation of an experience: it makes you part of the experience. That is, if you take the journey, open in mind and heart and humble in the presence of something special, something that can change you - even a little (which is a lot). As Hopkins puts it in his last poem, To R.B., "The widow of an insight lost she lives, with aim / Now known and hand at work now never wrong."

Sweet fire, the sire of muse, my soul needs this. ‘Sweet fire’: a Pålsson concert always has it. ‘Pictures must be miraculous’ said Rothko: the same holds for a concert. Hold your breath: here comes Hans!

Visual Arts: Desmond Morris: Last of the Surrealists

We are honoured to feature work ‘the last of the Surrealists’, Desmond Morris.

Since he exhibited with Joan Miro in 1950, Morris has been gradually recognised worldwide as an artist of real quality, probably the foremost exponent of Surrealism in Britain and beyond.

Better known from his ten years presenting Zootime on BBC TV, and even more so from the amazing success of his book ‘The Naked Ape’ (20 million copies sold worldwide), Morris is also a surrealist painter of note: his first exhibition was in 1948 and he still paints regularly.

Highlights of The Hopkins Festival

Celebrity Festival Concert with Swedish Pianist, Hans Pålsson. Pålsson will play Mozart: Piano Concerto in A Major (KV331); Schubert: Four Impromptus (D 899); Beethoven : Bagatelle ‘Fur Elise’, version 1 and recently found version 2, finishing with Piano Sonata, op 53, ‘Waldstein’ who will play Bach Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert in Newbridge College Theatre July 22nd at 7 pm. In 2010, Hans created a sensation when he played all 32 Beethoven sonatas within 12 days. This series was a sell-out. 'Palsson is a pianist of genius' (Svenska Dagbladet). Many other such tributes have been paid, internationally, to the depth and lyricism of his playing.

Visual Arts: ‘the last of the Surrealists’, Desmond Morris.

we are proud to have a wonderful, inspired Exhibition by Desmond Morris, of The Naked Ape fame and presenter of ZooTime on the BBC. Desmond has spent much of his life since fame and celebrity in the 70s and is now recognised at the last of The Surrealists. This Exhibition promises to be a real delight.Abandon the control of reason and favour what seemed to the Surrealists the only worthwhile artistic impulse: a world of pure, unmoored, imagination, of swirling shapes and colours that defied rational explanation and even flew in the face of it. Venue: Newbridge College Theatre. More details on our website Visual Arts Exhibition by Desmond Morris, last of the Surrealists
