Join Safe Home Ireland on our Fundraising Walk on the National Famine Way in May 2024.
We will be leaving from EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin’s Docklands on Saturday 11th May and arriving at the Strokestown Park House and National Famine Museum, Co. Roscommon Sunday 19th May
This is a self-directed challenge over a 9 day period and you can walk (or cycle) for a day, part of a day or do the full challenge if you wish. There is a once off fee of €30 (inclusive of Eventbrite fees) and you can do as much or as little as you wish. We plan to start at 10.30am each morning and further details will be shared via a WhatsApp group, (set up for the duration of this challenge only), for those who register
A 'Walk Pack' will be available to include the Walk route each day, a High Viz Tabard, T-shirt and Baseball hat together a Sponsorship Card (optional). Packs will be available for collection at the starting point/along the route each day. If you would like the pack to be posted out to you, please send your full postal address via email to: karen@safehomeireland.com. NOTE ... THERE IS A LIMITED SUPPLY OF MERCHANDISE SO BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.

About the National Famine Way
The National Famine Way is a 165km cross country walking and cycling trail that traces the footsteps of 1,490 Strokestown tenants, men, women and children who were marched from Roscommon to Dublin in May 1847 or ‘Black 47’, one of the worst years of suffering of the Great Irish Famine, after they failed to pay their rent. It weaves through country lanes, villages, towns and Dublin city mostly along the banks of the Royal Canal. In Dublin, they boarded a ship to Liverpool before journeying to North America on board some of the worst coffin ships of the time. Of the 1,490 who had left Strokestown over 700 died, and were buried at sea or on Grosse Île. They became known as the 'Missing 1,490'.
The National Famine Way features a digital storybook connected to 32 pairs of Bronze Children’s Shoes interspersed along the entire trail and an Anthem by renowned folk singer Declan O’Rourke. The digital resources are on the National Famine Way Website and National Famine Way Audio App.
