Carlow College, St. Patrick's invites you to our public lecture series for 2021/22.
For this Valentine’s day special lecture, philosophy lecturer Dr Noel Kavanagh will explore how the ideas of love in some of the best known plays and novels on the Leaving Cert syllabus have their source in Plato’s Symposium. A book written in 385BCE.
From Shakespeare’s Othello and Macbeth to Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein and a Picture of Dorian Gray, Noel will talk about the influence of Plato on all these authors and playwrights ideas of love!’
This lecture is of particular interest to Leaving Cert students as it will assist in preparing for Leaving Cert English Examinations in 2022.

About the Speaker
Dr Noel Kavanagh is a lecturer in Philosophy at the Department of Humanities, Carlow College. A native of Kildare, he entered third level education as a mature student in 1992, gaining his Ph.D. at Maynooth University in 2005. His primary area of interest is the concept of love in philosophy and culture. Current areas of research include phenomenological psychology and the interconnections between philosophy, psychoanalysis and Literature. He is the author of several articles and presentations on these topics.
