Traditional Bodhrán Masterclass with Colm Murphy
Join us for an exclusive Traditional Bodhrán Masterclass led by the legendary percussionist Colm Murphy. This workshop is a key highlight of the Cobh Trad Fest 2026, delivered in partnership with the Cork ETB School of Music to provide high-level professional instruction.
About the Instructor Originally from Cork, Colm Murphy is a highly respected bodhrán player and artist, best known for his central role with the seminal traditional ensemble De Dannan. With four decades of experience as a session player, his distinctive traditional style has informed the performances and recorded work of many of Irish music’s iconic players, including Altan, Máirtín O’Connor, Jackie Daly, and Mary Bergin. A veteran educator, he is a tutor at University College Cork and released the acclaimed 1986 album “An Bodhrán – The Irish Drum,” demonstrating his deep respect for the subtleties of Irish dance music.
Player Suitability & Skill Level
- Level: Intermediate to Advanced.
- Requirements: Participants should have mastered the fundamentals of their instrument and be able to competently accompany traditional tune types, such as jigs and reels.
- Note: These classes are not suitable for beginners.
The Schedule – Saturday, 25th July 2026
- 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Masterclass Instructional Session (Includes a 15-minute tea and coffee break).
- 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Break for Lunch.
- 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Workshop Showcase Performance at Cobh Library—All participants are invited to perform.
