Event Details

If you've always wanted to give sailing a go this is the perfect opportunity to dip your toe in the water.

Waterford Harbour Sailing Club (Dunmore East) run an open try sailing evening at the start of the season on Tuesdays (June 11th, 18th, 25th, July 2nd) 18:30-21:30 in Dunmore East.

  • You don’t need to be a club member
  • You don’t need a boat
  • You don’t need experience

Bookings:  Adults €20, U18 €10.

For the past 2 years the Try Sailing event has been oversubscribed so we advise booking as soon as possible to avoid dissappointment.

We have 3 categories of sailing.

  • Teen/Adult – dinghy sailing. This event will take place in a fleet of Wayfarer or similar dinghies.
  • Child (13 and under) – dinghy sailing. This event will take place in a fleet of Optimist dinghies under the watchful eye of our trained instructors.
  • Cruiser. For this event you join a small group to go out on a large sailing cruiser captained by one of our members. You will enjoy the delights of Waterford harbour from a new perspective.

On the evening you may let us know of your preference for crewing a dinghy or cruiser and we will do our best to facilitate you, however you may be allocated to either one. ** see FAQ about what to wear.

It's bad weather, will the event be cancelled ?

We'll try to give as much notice as possible for cancellations but the weather can be fickle. Before you head down to Dunmore East you should check event status on our website here -

What are my parking options ?

There is a car park in front of the club house. If the car park is full there is further parking as you enter the harbour (500m away). Please don't park your car in boat parking spaces.

Where do I go when I arrive ?

You are going to Waterford Harbour Sailing Club (beside Dunmore East adventure center). When you arrive go through the main entrance of the club house and up the stairs to the bar to get registered.

What do I bring ?

  • Your ticket
  • Suitable clothing - see next question
  • A change of clothes (just in case)
  • A towel and toiletries

What should I wear ?

Do always remember you are going to be on the sea, it’s often colder and windier than you expect, so bring more clothing than you think you need. You may get wet so always bring a change of clothes and a towel to dry off. We have excellent changing rooms at the club house, you can take a hot shower afterwards if you wish. The club will provide life jackets/buoyancy aids but clothing will NOT be provided (that includes wetsuits). Children, especially, need to keep warm a long wetsuit is best and a windcheater essential.

The club can advise you on what you will need to wear, especially if you want to try dinghy sailing. See our dinghy sailing introduction page for recommended dinghy wear.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Contact through eventbrite or you can drop an email to

What's the refund policy?

No refunds before the event. If the event is cancelled due to weather (it is sailing!) you will be issued a refund.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

We prefer if you do but we can check your registration online at the club house.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes, but you need to tell us when you arrive and provide the printed ticket. Transfers are only possible for the same ticket category (ie. an adult can only swap with another adult).

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

see the answer above.
