On the occasion of the exhibition, EUmies Award 2022, being at the Printworks Dublin, the Irish Architecture Foundation is delighted to present Unlocking Potential. This seminar is a partnership between the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.Featuring architects whose work has been nominated for the EUmies Award in 2022 or 2024, and with a keynote by architect Francesca Torzo, Unlocking Potential is a unique two-part seminar with a focus on developing a culture of adaptation and reuse of historic buildings and places through high-quality design and conservation practice.This event is for architects, students, clients and commissioners and the general public interested on hearing from architects on their real experiences and case-studies working in the area of built heritage in Ireland.The seminar is in two parts and attendance is possible at one or both events. Tickets are available for each part of the seminar, available below.14h - Afternoon SeminarThe afternoon event takes place from 14.00h to 17.30h and features a range of speakers from Ireland, including architects whose work has been listed for the EUmies Award. The seminar of case-studies will explore the challenges and potentials of working with a range of historic buildings. Speakers include Professor Loughlin Kealy,Valerie Mulvin and Ruth O' Herlihy(McCullough Mulvin), Gráinne Shaffrey, Steve Larkin, and Vicky Landy (RKD architects).18h - Early evening, Keynote with architect Francesca TorzoAt 18.00h, architect Francesca Torzo will give a keynote talk, presenting her innovative and award-winning work on materials and building reuse in a lecture format.We are delighted that Sheila O'Donnell, director of O' Donnell &amp; Tuomey Architects will offer a response to the lecture by Francesca Torzo.Both events will be chaired by Emmett Scanlon, Director, Irish Architecture Foundation. She studied architecture at TU Delft, ETSAB Barcelona, Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio (Switzerland) and IUAV in Venice. In 2001 she developed an experimental method for dry construction in stone with the engineer Jurg Conzett and HTW at Chur, in Switzerland. She worked in Switzerland for Peter Zumthor and for Bosshard Vaquer architekten, before setting up her own practice in Genoa, Italy, in 2008. From 2009 to 2017, Torzo taught at Atelier Bearth in Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio , in Switzerland. She is currently a professor at Bergen Arkitekthøgskole, Norway. In 2018, fragments and studies of her award-winning Z33 House for Contemporary Art was exhibited at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, FREESPACE. Francesca was invited by Curators' Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell. This is the first time Francesca Torzo has given a public lecture in Ireland.___Unlocking Potential and the lecture by Francesca Torzo is a partnership between the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.The EUmies Awards Exhibition at the Printworks is presented in Ireland by the RIAI and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the European Liaison Office in Ireland and the OPW.
