Exploring urban living through the contemporary techno-civic
About this event
Urban Hosts is a programme of activities that provokes and promotes ways in which we can live in cities. Established in 2013 the programme brings together people who are actively producing alternatives to given city habits and 'smart city' norms.
This edition of Urban Host, opens with the launch of the publication the emerged from the project TALES OF CARE & REPAIR.
TALES OF CARE & REPAIR was a year long project (Feb 2021-Feb 2022) in which stories of everyday care and repair were gathered. The project took that form of online people collection of tagged photographs that were upload to the TALES OF CARE & REPAIR website. Images consisted of objects that people had taken by people of 'things' they have repaired. This archive created a living snap shot of DIY and professional repair practices that also documented cultures of repair with a focus on repair economies and activism in Bristol (UK), India (New Delhi) and Brazil (Belo Horizonte). Accompanying the archive between Feb 2021-Feb 2022 a programme of events brought further attention to the notion of repair cultures and our 'Right to Repair', with a number of workshops focusing on the co-creation of local Repair Declarations with various communities.
Led by Repair Acts (School of Art and Design and Digital Cultures Research Centre at the University of the West of England, Bristol), in partnership with the environmental NGO Toxics Link (New Delhi) and Gambiologia (Brazil), TALES OF CARE & REPAIR was supported by the British Council's Creative Commissions programme.
Guest speaker:
Felipe Schmidt Fonseca s a Brazilian activist and free/open advocate turned researcher living in Berlin, Germany, whose work currently focuses on waste prevention and smart cities. An advisor on the TALES OF CARE & REPAIR project, Felipe worked with the programme co-lead Fred Paulino(Gambiologia) to support the Brazilian arm of the programme.
