Event description

Description

The next instalment of Kirkoskammer is all about duelling violins, and features Irish violinists Jane Hackett and Siún Milne. Robert Coleman’s study on the instrument is evident in his Spectrum, a work in three movements that hints to traditional hardanger techniques and textures. The violin is illuminated alongside contrasting moments of silence in Hay Que Caminar” Soñando for violin duo by Luigi Nono; the legendary work was written at the very end of the composer’s life and refers to the motto which he discovered during a pilgrimage translating roughly to: "traveller, there is no way to travel, only travelling".

Winner of the Kirkoskammer International Composition Competition Johan Haven lends his unique voice to this programme with the premiere of Singing of Staying. Currently based in Cologne, the Ohio-native’s music has been performed by East Coast Contemporary Ensemble, the Divertimento Ensemble and by musicians of the Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie (IEMA). The second premiere on the programme comes from Dublin based composer Susan Geaney, whose newly reworked Meditation (originally for clarinet and flute) draws on Geaney’s background in deep listening and sonic meditation.
