West Side Story
Wed 22 March 2017, 19:30 – 22:00 GMT
Trinity Musical Theatre Society is thrilled to present its inaugural production — the multi-award winning West Side Story. This all-encompassing performance is lined up to be a surefire success, showcasing talent and creativity from all corners of Trinity College.
Set in the streets of the Upper West Side of 1950s New York City, West Side Story tells the tale of the all-American ‘Jets’ and their ongoing feud with a rival gang, the Puerto Rican ‘Sharks’. In initial attempts to coexist, the Jets and Sharks reluctantly unite at a school dance, but to no surprise, trouble only continues to arise. Animosity between the gangs is exacerbated when former Jet Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of the Sharks’ leader. The star-crossed lovers, torn between loyalty to their families and love for each other, attempt to rise above the hostilities that form the backdrop to their relationship. However, when tension between the Jets and Sharks turns to violence, Tony and Maria learn that their love cannot exist separately to the troubles which surround them.
A classic of musical theatre, West Side Story continues to captivate audiences sixty years after its debut. With its exuberant choreography and outstanding score (including show-stoppers “America”, “Tonight” and “Somewhere”), this energetic tale of youthful passion will have audiences on the edge of their seats from curtain rise to curtain fall.
Trinity Musical Theatre invites you to witness a moment in history and enjoy one of theatre’s most unforgettable shows.
