Open Cell

BIOHM opens the doors to their materials research lab to offer you the opportunity to get you hands dirty and make your own version of their bio-based material, Orb (Organic Refuse Biocompound), to take home.
Calling on all innovators, designers, engineers, designers and curious young minds - choose from a variety of food waste ingredients to create your desired properties: colour, shape, pattern, texture - and using our unique organic binding agent, you can transform your starter into a highly durable and decorative product.
Orb is the only material of its kind and does not use any synthetic chemicals or additives. It is 100% natural, biodegradable and vegan. Mixed or segregated food waste could be used to achieve a variety of properties and appearances, making it highly versatile. It is an affordable substitute for semi-structural wood-based sheet material (e.g. dry-lining) or for sustainable yet luxurious interior decoration or design. Orb is currently ready for interior architectural use and is being developed further for exterior use.
This event is part of Biodesign Here Now, an exhibition taking place at Open Cell as part of the London Design Festival. Open Cell is a research hub featuring 70 experimental studios in shipping containers including the first open access bio-lab & biomaterial-lab in London. This is an exciting opportunity to meet emerging international designers and start-ups showcasing cutting-edge ideas that will shape our futures.
