Event description
Writing for the Web - This workshop is for anyone who writes or edits web content. (TCD Staff)

About this event

This workshop is for anyone who writes or edits web content. It’s a valuable refresher for experienced writers and will provide a solid foundation for anyone who is new to creating web content.

Writing for the web is very different from other types of writing, mainly because online readers access information differently. According to research, almost 80% of users scan the page instead of reading word for word – and you may only have a few seconds to capture users’ attention.

During this highly practical workshop, you’ll learn how to apply international research to create web content that is clear, concise, well-structured, accessible and user-friendly. You’ll also have the opportunity to work on real-life examples, in small breakout groups.

On completion of this workshop, you will:

  • Feel confident you can create user-focused content for your website
  • Have the skills to plan and write web pages which achieve their objectives
  • Understand how to make online writing accessible to all readers
  • Be able to write in plain professional English (to convey information quickly, clearly and concisely

Topics covered include:

  • Planning: How to create an effective brief, plan a user-focused webpage and build a quick first draft
  • Writing: Use language, layout and links to create content that engages its target users
  • Use a readability test
  • Write in a clear, concise, accessible style and tone of voice
  • Ensure content is in a logical order and easy to scan
  • Help users to navigate and find what they need

The trainer is Sarah Marriott, director of Plain English Ireland and a former Irish Times journalist. Sarah is a former lecturer on the MA in Journalism at TU Dublin and co-author of Common Errors in Written English. She has trained staff at Trinity College for many years and understands your challenges in creating web content to meet a wide range of objectives and reach different types of users.
