AMHARCLANN GHAOTH DOBHAIR

AT THE HEART OF COMMUNITY LIFE

Gaoth Dobhair has a rich history of theatre and drama productions.  Aisteoirí Ghaoth Dobhair, founded in 1931, produced their first play “In Aimsir an Mháirtínigh”, an original play by Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde, founder, in Derrybeg Hall in 1932.  They gained critical acclaim over the years.

The internationally renowned actress Siobhan McKenna officially opened Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair in 1961 and the theatre has beenat the heart of community life ever since—in terms of entertainment, culture and the preservation of the Irish language.

Their plays and pantomimes became a staple of Gaeltacht social life.  Members of the theatre group have gone on to create TV shows and have appeared in numerous television programs.

Many Irish musical talents were inspired by their formative experiences on the stage of Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair, they include Eithne Ní Bhraonáin - known as Enya,Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan fame, members of the internationally renowned group Clannad and Na Casaidigh.

Due to economic circumstances and lack of funding, the theatre fell into disrepair and subsequently closed in 2007.  The trustees embarked on an ambitious campaign to refurbish the theatre. The total cost of the project was €850,000.

Finally after 10 years Minister of State Joe McHugh officially re-opened the theatre on the 24TH March 2017.

Since the re-opening the theatre is back at the heart of community life again offering a venue for entertainment, conventions, social and cultural events, giving audiences the opportunity to enjoy the best local, national and international arts and events in the newly refurbished, wheelchair accessible 290 seater auditorium.
