Denise Heeley
Denise Heeley is a Community Herbalist who is committed to sharing her love and knowledge of
the medicinal power of plants. Her workshops are a calling to those interested in exploring the
healing power of herbs to step forward and rebuild the stores of knowledge and practices that were
part of our way of life until not so long ago. It is a shame to have parted with so much of our
traditions with herbs but it is within our power to weave that knowledge and practice back into our
lives so that we can pass it on to the next generation, just as our ancestors did. Herbalism has a
very important role to play in Ireland as we reclaim sovereignty of the land and reconnect with past
traditions. She believes that knowledge of plants that grow in your local habitat enriches our sense
of place and our connection to the landscape. There are stories, memories and reserves of
invaluable wisdom in plants, hedgerows, fields, along the shoreline; all waiting to be discovered.
Combined, these elements enrich our sense of place, language and culture. Welcome the herbs
as your allies and come on the journey with her to reclaim lost traditions. Empower yourself to heal
with herbs as your teachers!
First step: build your home apothecary to have your healing herbs on hand as and when you need
them. This is a very grounding way to stay connected with nature. As the seasons pass, you build
on your plant I.D. skills and forage for your healing herbs. This practice will enable you to become
familiar with the plants in your locality and indeed you will look forward to each changing season
with anticipation.
