Description

We cordially invite you to attend a day exploring the threats and solutions of the militarized world, from a global, local, and environmental point of view.

The day will focus on:

1. Identifying the most serious threats to the people of Ireland and in the wider sense to all of humanity.

2. Exploring how these threats can be alleviated and prevented from occurring.

Current threats to humanity, and consequently Ireland, include:

1. Nuclear war, and nuclear power pollution such as Fukushima, and Sellafield.

2. War’s effect on Climate Change, and general environmental damage, including desertification and rising sea levels.

3. Wars, including civil wars, and human rights abuses.

4. Forced migration, refugee crises, and internally displaced peoples, resulting from the above.

5. Abuses of power, and failures in the rule of law, at local, national and international/Global levels.

The day will start with a look at the Macro/Global Perspectives on War & the Environment through these short talks:

Keynote Speech - David Swanson, World Beyond War.

War Destroys Nature - Barry Sweeney, World Beyond War.

Nuclear Roulette - TBA

Nobody Asks Poor People If They Want War - Peadar King, RTE

Inside Iraq - Hashim Alhadeedy

Fortress Europe - refugees fleeing from war - Caoimhe Butterly Documentary.


After lunch we will look at the Irish and European context through these talks:

From Shannon to Iraq - Irish complicity in war and human rights abuse - John Lannon, Shannonwatch.

Militarisation of Europe - Roger Cole, PANA

Ireland’s foreign and defence policies - John Maguire, Afri/Action from Ireland.

Irish Arms/defence industry - Margaretta D’Arcy

These informative talks, will lead into engaging, and practical workshops in the afternoon which will take place in the WeCreate Centre, Cloughjordan Ecovillage in Tipperary, organised by World Beyond War and Shannonwatch.

The event is free, although donations will be welcome.

Lunch will be available for purchase. Please indicate if you want a lunch.
