About this event

Better Life Cycle: Lough Derg Challenge 2021. For St Joseph's Foundation, Charleville, Co Cork

Better Life Cycle's seventh event, Lough Derg Challenge, is taking place on Saturday, 4th September 2021 in Castleconnell, Co Limerick.

Why participate in Better Life Cycle, instead of other events?

Better Life Cycle is different from typical sportives in that cyclists are grouped together by preferred speed, ensuring that everyone involved can safely complete the event at their own pace, while at the same time providing a more social atmosphere within each group. You're also helping out an extremely worthwhile cause - St Joseph's Foundation in Charleville, Co Cork.

So what are the routes?

Two routes will be on offer as usual - 147 km and 65 km - both of which take in the scenic shoreline of Lough Derg.

Both routes start and finish at the Castle Oaks House Hotel in Castleconnell.

The 147 km route heads north out of Castleconnell to Birdhill, Ballina, Portroe, and almost into Nenagh, before heading north again staying with the shore of Lough Derg. The first food stop will be in Terryglass, after which cyclists will head through Portumna, Ballyshrule, and then south through Whitegate, Mountshannon, Scarrif and into the second food stop. The final leg of the journey will take cyclists to Killaloe, O'Briensbridge and back to Castleconnell.

The 65 km route heads north out of Castleconnell towards O'Briensbridge and into Broadford and Bodyke where the food stop will be. Cyclists will then head back to Castleconnell via Tuamgraney, Killaloe and O'Briensbridge.

You can view the routes in detail at the following links:

What's involved in signing up?

There is no fee to sign up for the event, though participants must pledge to raising €100 in sponsorship, 100% of which goes directly to improving the services St Joseph's Foundation offers to its users.

To date, St Joseph's has purchased six fully wheelchair-accessible mini-buses and has upgraded its kitchen and other rooms with funds provided by Better Life Cycle. Without the invaluable support from the event's participants none of it would be possible, and we want to keep the wheels moving for as long as we can!

You have 2 payment options: Pay online or alternatively a sponsorship card will be issued to participants shortly after registering.

IMPORTANT: EVENT JERSEY INFORMATION

Even though we had to cancel our event last year in 2020 we received huge support and donations from the cyclists who had registered. By way of thanks we issued these cyclists with the 2020 event jersey.

As we try to reduce our costs to ensure we raise as much as possible for St Josephs, we are going to use the 2020 jersey for this years event. We ask that if you received a jersey last year, that you would use the jersey this year and choose the no jersey option when registering. We will have the 2020 jersey available for those who did not receive one last year.
