Community Gardens Ireland Weekend Networking and Learning Event
Community Gardens Ireland (established in 2011) is offering a full Weekend Networking and Learning Event on Saturday, 1st and Sunday, 2nd October, 2016, at Carriag Dúlra who are kindly hosting us in their Permaculture Small-Holding on a lovely hillside in Wicklow.
This dynamic weekend will include a LYCS training workshop focused on low cost healthy eating and global food systems, a screening of Symphony of the Soil, opportunities for networking and discussions about Community Gardening in Ireland. CG Ireland will also have its AGM with presentations on the work of the organisation to date, with further opportunities to get involved and help contribute to the future direction of the Network. There will also be time to learn about Carraig Dúlra with a talk and tour where Suzie and Mike Cahn will share their experience of developing marginal land, creating a education hub, community buying club, CSA box scheme, and outreach in local Community Gardens and Schools.
Organic lunch and refreshments for both days are included.
Carraig Dúlra has fully equipped a camp kitchen where those staying overnight can bring or cook their own diner and breakfast foods for themselves or to share with the group in a pot luck fashion.

Day 1 - Saturday, 1st October, 10.30 onwards
10.30am - Registration and Refreshments
11.00am - 1.30pm - Rachel Dempsey from LYCS Development Education - facilitated workshop:
“Healthy Eating without Costing the Earth”
The training will encourage us to discover more about where our food comes from and the global food system, empowering people in their community to better understand their food choices. This workshop helps make sense of our food choices specifically exporting:
-
what people eat in Ireland and around the world and how do they chose it
-
where our food comes from how our food is produced
-
how to understand food labels and claims such as ‘healthy’, ‘natural’, ‘fair trade’, ‘organic’
-
how to choose real healthy and affordable food and sustainable alternatives to the global food system
What will participants gain from this input by LYSC?
-
Fun activities to pass on to participants to help them choose healthier, more environmentally friendly food.
-
Increased knowledge about the social and environmental problems with the global food system and how to change it.
-
Practical tips (recipes, ingredients, label awareness) on eating more sustainably to pass on to your organisation, colleagues and participants.
-
Practical information and contacts on where/how to source affordable, sustainable food.
1.30pm - 2.15pm - Organic and local lunch provided by Carraig Dulra
2.15pm - 4.00pm - Continuation of the workshop
4.00pm - 7.00pm - Open time, relax or take the an opportunity for conversation, camp kitchen open for heating food, shared cooking and meal.
7.00pm to 9.00pm Film Screening of feature length documentary Symphony of the Soil
“Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. By understanding the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants and animals, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource.”
