Event description

Description

If the Walls had ears is a spoken word weekend, a communal conversation which requires a listening ear and a quiet setting. Curated by Ann Marie Kelly it is set in the walled garden of The Pantry in Portlaoise. The magical garden is an area of stillness and tranquility with no other distractions amidst the fairy lit trees which so happens to be in the middle of the town of Portlaoise. The setting is natural as are the speakers in an informal setting. Ann Marie will merely introduce each speaker who will then take to the stage alone. On the simple dimly lit stage there is one mic searching for ears to listen. The audience are allowed to interact after each speaker. Live music is dispersed between each speaker

Each storyteller comes from a diverse background. From a young local poet to a world famous fiddle player, a ‘lost’ engineer to a local sex education teacher, a psychotherapist to an Acting voice trainer. The stories supply and fuel the audience with musings on life and surviving each day. The audience are almost ‘eavesdroppers’ to ‘bike shed’ chatter.

The speakers are people who are breaking barriers everyday but continue to struggle in the face of adversity. ‘There is no perfect ending’ as Pam Clinton the psychotherapist might say and this is the essence of the festival, there are no answers but their story might guide you. By sharing personal stories the audience are reassured and potentially reaffirmed.

The stories will be recorded for Broadcast on Midlands 103
