Joe Moore and the 'Sunday Journal'
Date and time
Joe Moore and the 'Sunday Journal'. The insurance man who wanted to own a newspaper.
About this event
In July 1980, the Sunday Journal newspaper was in its first few months of operation but it was already in danger of closing down because of its financial difficulties. Joe Moore stepped in as the new backer. At the time, he was head of the PMPA (Private Motorists Protection Association) and had no experience of the newspaper business. This lecture, presented by Dublin City Councils Historian in Residence for Dublin Central, Dr Mary Muldowney, will outline Moore's acquisition of the Sunday Journal; the editorial policy he imposed, changing it from a 'farming paper' to a general tabloid with a focus on motoring. There will also be discussion of his business and political dealings before the paper was forced to close down completely in June 1982. His mismanagement caused him to be dismissed from the PMPA in November 1983.
This lecture will be held in the Central Library, ILAC Centre on Wednesday June 1st at 1pm.
