Event description

Description

George Frideric Handel's debut of the Messiah burst onto the stage of the Musick Hall in Dublin on April 13, 1742. The audience there swelled to a record 700, and the ladies had heeded pleas by management to wear dresses "without Hoops" in order to make "Room for more company."

275 years later, the 130-voice Dublin County Choir will perform this magnificient composition in Whitefriar Street Church, close to the bustling centre of Dublin and less than 2 kilometers from the place that the Messiah saw its first ever performance. Built in 1827, this historic church lies at the heart of its local Dublin community and provides a peaceful refuge for passers-by.

This concert will continue the tradition of performances of Handel's Messiah in Dublin. It will feature Sylvia O'Brien, Cliona McDonough, Eoin Hynes and Jeffrey Ledwidge four celebrated Irish soloists and it promises to be equally rousing, uplifiting and soothing. The choir and Dublin Sinfionetta Orchestra will be conducted by Colin Block.

No dress hoops please!
